Tip O’Neill Irish Diaspora Award Ceremony tonight

The final touches are being put in place today for this year’s Tip O’Neill Irish Diaspora Award ceremony which will take place in the Inishowen Gateway Hotel Buncrana this evening. 

 

The gala event will see US philanthropist Loretta Brennan Glucksman receive the 2015 Irish Diaspora Award from Minister for State for the Diaspora, Mr. Jimmy Deenihan TD in recognition for her outstanding contributions as a prominent member of the Irish diaspora .

 

Loretta Brennan Glucksman, has been involved in philanthropic endeavours for more than two decades, focusing on education, the arts, healthcare and peace initiatives in both the United States and Ireland, a passion she shared with her late husband Lew Glucksman.

 

Chair of the Tip O’Neill Irish Diaspora Committee, Cllr. Nicholas Crossan believes that Loretta’s resumé speaks for itself and it is a privilege to be in a position to honour her outstanding contributions in both the United States and Ireland saying “Loretta, has worked tirelessly to promote Irish culture and to establish strong ties between America and the island of Ireland and I am looking forward to welcoming her back to her roots later today”.

 

Her grandfather, David Brennan was originally from the east Inishowen fishing port of Greencastle.

 

This evening’s ceremony will be hosted by RTE’s Aengas MacGrianna who also has strong connections with Donegal.

 

It is expected that up to 150 people will attend this evenings award ceremony which is the centre piece in a weekend of events marking the life and times of the late Tip O’Neill, an illustrious grandson of a Donegal emigrant, and an eminent member of the Irish Diaspora.

 

A new exhibition dedicated to the life and times of the late Tip O’Neill and his family will also be unveiled at tonight’s ceremony.

 

Other events taking place over the weekend include the Tip O’Neill Diaspora Lecture with Professor Rónan Fanning at 11am on Saturday, September 26 in the Sliabh Sneacht Centre, Drumfries and the Inishowen Schools Diaspora competition on Friday 25 September at 1pm in Naomh Padraig National School, Drumfries.
